Tropical Resources & Ecosystem Sustainability

1. Training Introduction

Tropical ecosystems—ranging from rainforests and wetlands to coastal zones and savannahs—are among the most biodiverse and productive systems on Earth. However, they face increasing pressure from deforestation, climate change, land degradation, unsustainable exploitation, biodiversity loss, and socio-economic constraints.
This training provides an in-depth understanding of tropical resource dynamics, ecosystem processes, and sustainable practices needed to conserve and manage these critical landscapes. Participants gain the scientific, technical, and governance skills required to ensure long-term ecological integrity and sustainable community development in tropical regions.

2. Training Objective

The course aims to:

  • Equip participants with foundational and advanced knowledge of tropical ecosystems and resource systems.
  • Strengthen technical capacity in biodiversity conservation, landscape management, and ecological restoration.
  • Introduce emerging tools and best practices for sustainable resource use in tropical environments.
  • Enhance skills in climate change adaptation, environmental monitoring, and ecosystem-based management.
  • Promote participatory and community-centered approaches that link environmental conservation with livelihoods.
  • Prepare participants to apply sustainability principles in policy, planning, and field implementation.

3. Targeted Group

The training is designed for:

  • Environmental and forestry officers
  • Conservation practitioners and park rangers
  • NGO and civil society actors
  • Local government officials and planners
  • Community-based organization leaders
  • Agricultural extension workers
  • Wildlife and ecosystem researchers
  • Students and early-career environmental professionals
  • Private sector actors in agriculture, eco-tourism, forestry, and coastal resource use

4. Course Duration

8 Comprehensive Modules delivered over 2–4 weeks, depending on delivery format (intensive, weekly, online, or blended).

5. Training Methodology

FOTADE Training, Research and Resource Development Centre adopts a participatory, hands-on learning approach that includes:
