Lean Six Sigma Roadmap

Training Introduction:

The auditing profession is evolving rapidly in response to increasing demands for efficiency, risk-based focus, and added value. Lean Six Sigma (LSS) provides a structured, data-driven methodology that helps audit professionals identify inefficiencies, reduce process variation, and enhance audit quality. This course equips auditors with Lean Six Sigma tools and techniques to improve the end-to-end audit lifecycle — from planning and fieldwork to reporting and follow-up.

By leveraging the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) roadmap, participants will learn how to optimize audit planning, enhance risk assessments, reduce rework and cycle time, and deliver more impactful audit results. This course is ideal for internal and external auditors, audit managers, compliance teams, and quality assurance professionals.

Training Objectives:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand and apply Lean Six Sigma principles within the audit context
  • Use the DMAIC framework to improve audit processes
  • Apply data analysis to risk identification and audit testing
  • Enhance audit efficiency and eliminate non-value-added activities
  • Integrate continuous improvement in the audit function

Target Audience:

  • Internal and External Auditors
  • Audit Managers and Leads
  • Compliance & Risk Professionals
  • Quality Assurance Teams
  • Process Improvement Specialists in Audit Functions

Course Duration:

  • 8 Modules (spread over 5–10 days depending on depth and format)

Course Modules Overview:

Module 1: Introduction to Lean Six Sigma in Auditing

Objective: Understand how Lean Six Sigma applies to the audit function and why it’s critical for modern audit teams.

Topics:

  • Principles of Lean and Six Sigma
  • Evolution of auditing and continuous improvement
  • Benefits of LSS in audit: efficiency, effectiveness, value
  • Overview of the DMAIC methodology
  • The role of auditors in process improvement
  • Case examples of LSS in internal audit

Module 2: Define Phase – Scoping Audit Process Improvements

Objective: Learn to identify audit process problems, define objectives, and scope improvement projects.

Topics:

  • Identifying inefficiencies in audit planning and execution
  • Developing a project charter for audit improvement
  • VOC in the audit context (audit clients, stakeholders)
  • High-level audit process mapping (SIPOC)
  • Linking audit KPIs to business goals
  • Risk-based audit prioritization

Module 3: Measure Phase – Understanding Current Audit Performance

Objective: Gather and validate data on current audit process performance.

Topics:

  • Audit performance metrics (cycle time, rework, findings accuracy)
  • Data collection and sampling methods in audit
  • Time-tracking and workload analysis
  • Process mapping of current audit workflows
  • Basic statistical concepts for audit data
  • Identifying bottlenecks and non-value-added steps

Module 4: Analyze Phase – Root Cause Analysis of Audit Inefficiencies

Objective: Use analytical tools to identify and confirm root causes of audit issues or inefficiencies.

Topics:

  • Common causes of audit inefficiencies and delays
  • Root Cause Analysis (Fishbone, 5 Whys) in audits
  • Audit rework and error analysis
  • Audit findings trend analysis
  • Waste identification in audit (TIMWOODS applied to auditing)
  • Using Pareto analysis to prioritize improvement areas

Module 5: Improve Phase – Enhancing Audit Processes

Objective: Design and implement effective solutions to improve the audit process.

Topics:

  • Streamlining audit planning and scheduling
  • Standardizing working papers and testing procedures
  • Using Lean tools: 5S in audit documentation, visual controls
  • Automation opportunities (e.g., RPA in audit testing)
  • Process redesign for better evidence collection
  • Pilot testing audit improvements

Module 6: Control Phase – Sustaining Audit Improvements

Objective: Ensure improvements are sustained and embedded into standard audit practices.

Topics:

  • Control plans for audit process stability
  • Monitoring KPIs and process performance over time
  • Creating SOPs for new audit practices
  • Audit checklists and review protocols
  • Use of dashboards and visual management in audit
  • Training and knowledge transfer within the audit team

Module 7: Applying Lean Tools in the Audit Environment

Objective: Deep dive into Lean tools that auditors can use to enhance process performance.

Topics:

  • Value Stream Mapping of the audit lifecycle
  • 8 Wastes in audit: Identification and elimination
  • 5S in electronic and physical audit environments
  • Visual management and kanban boards for audit planning
