Statistical Sampling for Internal Auditors

Training Introduction:

Internal auditors are often required to test large volumes of data to form conclusions about controls, compliance, or transactions. Without efficient sampling, audits can become time-consuming, costly, or less reliable.

Statistical sampling allows auditors to draw conclusions about entire populations using scientifically defensible methods. It supports objectivity, enhances audit quality, and reduces audit effort while increasing assurance.

Module 2: Designing a Statistical Sample

  • Choosing the right sampling method:
    • Random sampling
    • Systematic sampling
    • Stratified sampling
    • Attribute vs. variable sampling
  • Determining sample size (based on risk, population size, confidence level, etc.)
  • Using statistical tables or Excel calculators
  • Documenting sampling methodology in audit working papers
  • Exercise: Calculate sample size and selection method for a hypothetical audit

Module 3: Executing and Evaluating the Sample

Objective: Perform testing on the sample and evaluate the results to support audit conclusions.

  • Extracting and testing the sample: tips and pitfalls
  • Handling exceptions: evaluating error types and patterns
  • Projecting results to the population
  • Determining whether control deviations or monetary errors are material
  • Documentation and interpretation of findings
  • When to expand the sample or take alternative actions
  • Exercise: Analyze and interpret sample results for both attribute and monetary sampling scenarios

Module 4: Integrating Sampling into Audit Strategy and Reporting

Objective: Incorporate sampling effectively into audit planning, execution, and reporting to stakeholders.

  • When to use statistical sampling (and when not to)
  • Integrating sampling into risk-based audit planning
  • Sampling in different audit areas (e.g., payroll, procurement, IT controls)
  • Using Excel, ACL, IDEA, and Power BI for sampling
  • Communicating sample results in audit reports
  • Ensuring defensibility in external reviews (e.g., regulators, peer review)
  • Exercise: Draft a sampling summary memo and reporting language for an audit finding
