1. Introduction

Water is a critical resource for life, health, ecosystems, and industry. However, increasing pollution from domestic, industrial, and agricultural sources poses significant risks to water quality and public health. This training program focuses on managing water quality and treating effluents to meet regulatory and environmental standards. It combines theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and regulatory awareness to build participants’ capacity in safeguarding water resources.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Sampling and testing protocols

Module 3: Water Quality Standards and Regulations

  • WHO guidelines and national standards
  • Effluent discharge limits and compliance

Module 4: Monitoring and Assessment of Water Quality

  • Sample collection techniques
  • Laboratory and field equipment use
  • Data analysis and interpretation

Module 5: Characteristics of Industrial Effluents

  • Pollutants from textiles, food processing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, etc.
  • Toxicity, persistence, and treatability

Module 6: Principles of Effluent Treatment

  • Primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment processes
  • Biological, chemical, and physical treatment techniques

Module 7: Design and Operation of Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs)

  • Process flow diagrams
  • Equipment selection and operation (clarifiers, aerators, filters, etc.)

Module 8: Sludge Management and Safe Disposal

  • Sludge thickening, digestion, dewatering
  • Disposal methods and potential reuse

Module 9: Water Reuse and Resource Recovery

  • Treated effluent reuse in agriculture, industry, and recharge
  • Energy and nutrient recovery

Module 10: Pollution Prevention and Cleaner Production

  • Process optimization
  • Water conservation strategies in industries

Module 11: Health, Safety, and Environmental Risk Management

  • Occupational health risks in ETPs
  • Emergency response planning and PPE use

Module 12: Integrated Water Quality Management

  • Basin-wide approaches
  • Stakeholder roles and community involvement

Awarded to participants who:

  • Attend at least 85% of training sessions
  • Complete practical and theoretical assignments
  • Participate in group exercises and assessments

Professional Certificate in Water Quality and Effluent Treatment (Advanced Track)

Awarded upon:

  • Passing a final assessment (written and/or practical)
  • Submission of a water quality improvement plan or ETP project
  • Demonstrating ability to apply learning in real-world settings

Certificates may be co-issued with environmental regulatory bodies, water utilities, universities, or international development partners.
